Securing Your Home the Right Way

Your home is your sanctuary, the place where you get to be yourself and get to express yourself. The last thing that you want is someone with bad intentions violating your sense of peace by breaking in.

It’s not so much the stuff that they steal – that can be replaced – but more that they have rifled through your private things. It’s a scary experience, even if you were away from home at the time. And, if you are at home when they break in, the situation can escalate pretty quickly.

But how do you protect yourself? How do you make sure that you and your family stay safe?

Your Basic Security Strategy

Start off with making sure that your locks are in good working order. Choose high-quality locks with keys that are not replicable. A Long Island locksmith can help you choose and install the right locks.

Make sure that no unauthorized people have access to the keys. If you have anyone coming in to work at your home, like a cleaner, plumber, etc. ensure that you let them in yourself, rather than leaving a key for them.

That also means not having a spare key hidden under the mat, or in a hide-a-key, or something similar. Criminals know exactly what tricks you might use to hide your spare so the best bet is to leave a spare key, if you must, with a trusted neighbor or friend.

And internal keys and locks are just as important as the ones that grant access in the first place. If someone does break into your home, you want them to have as little access to the whole house as possible. This means making sure that the locks on bedroom doors are as secure as external ones.

It also means ensuring that internal doors are locked when you leave, or when you retire at night and that the keys are kept secure as well. So, don’t leave the keys in the doors when locking them, for example.

If you have complete control of your keys, you have taken the first steps towards better security. If you feel that your keys might have been compromised, it is better to have a house locksmith Long Island come in and change them for you.

When You Should Get Your Keys Changed

  • When you first move in, change all the external locks on the doors and locks leading to key areas within the home, like the bedrooms.
  • If you have mislaid your keys outside of your home, even for a short while. While it might be a small error on your part like that you just dropped them, it could also be that someone has taken the keys to make a copy.
  • If you have a roommate or partner that moves out.
  • Anytime you suspect that the keys have been compromised.

Isn’t This All a Bit Paranoid?

It sounds a bit like something you might read in a spy thriller, doesn’t it? Changing the locks on the door because you and you partner are splitting up or when you move into a new place might seem like overkill, but you never know who wants to gain access to your place.

Perhaps the previous owners or your partner would never think of breaking into your place. Can you be sure, however, that they were as careful about the security of your keys? Or who they had given copies to?

When it comes to your home, a quick visit from a   Long Island locksmith   can be the best investment you will ever make.

There’s nothing quite like the sinking feeling of knowing you locked the keys in the car, especially when you have a lot of things to do. Don’t feel alone, it’s something that we have seen a lot as a Long Island Locksmith .

Still, it shouldn’t be a problem, should it? You see it in movies all the time, it takes a pro just a few minutes to unlock the door and drive off with the car, even when they have to hot wire it. And, in real life, it is also that simple - if you know how to break into a car or are willing to smash a window.

How hard can it be? You just need to get something into the car and jiggle open the lock. In theory, all you need is some wire that is pliable enough to snake through the window and catch the lock. In practice, it’s actually easier to try and open the door a little and work the lock from the side.

Either way, you risk damaging the locking mechanism or scratching the car up. That is why it is best to either get someone to bring the spare keys or call in a car key locksmith long island . Leave breaking into your car to the professionals, they can do it faster and a lot more efficiently.

When it comes to storing your valuables, or important documents, nothing quite beats a safe for security. Simply close and lock the safe as normal and your items are safe behind strengthened steel walls.

All of which is great, unless you forget the combination or lose the key, or the batteries run out on a digital safe. Depending on the type of safe you have, there are few things that you might want to try.

If these simple tricks do not work, or you have a more complex safe, you will need to call in your Long Island locksmith to help you crack the safe with minimal damage.
